Sheltered Housing for Older Persons

Sheltered Housing is rented accommodation that is specially designed for older people and is ideal for people who enjoy independent living.

Who is eligible for Sheltered Housing?

Anyone who is over 60, there is no upper age limit.
Anyone who is 55 - 59 in receipt of DLA
People living alone or couples. In the case of a couple, at least one person must fit the age requirement.

What does it provide?

Sheltered Housing does not provide personal care, but staff may be able to assist residents to access it.
Before offering you a sheltered property we check to make sure it meets your housing needs.
It aims to provide convenient and comfortable accommodation with added security, in an environment where residents have their own front door and can come and go as they please. The scheme provides the following facilities:

  • self contained flats
  • communal facilities such as-:

- laundry
- communal lounge for a variety of social activities
- gardens
- guest room
- hairdressing salon

  • security and safety features
  • a Scheme Manager 
  • twenty-four hour emergency response through connection of each flat to a call centre
  • CCTV door entry system

What does the Scheme Manager Do?

The Scheme Manager is usually about the building between Monday to Friday and when she is not there the schemes are linked into a call centre.

A Scheme Manager`s main duty is to act as a good neighbour providing general support to each of the residents, and to look after the building. In an emergency, such as a sudden illness or after a fall, the Scheme Manager will contact relatives, call a doctor or the emergency services as required. Scheme Manager`s are in daily contact with each resident either by a visit or via the intercom alarm system. The Scheme Manager is responsible for helping to develop the community within the scheme.

The Scheme Manager DOES NOT collect pensions, prescriptions or do shopping, nor is she allowed to administer medication. If friends or relatives were helping with these things before you moved into sheltered housing, they should continue to do so.

How much does it cost?

You pay weekly rent and a service charge (where applicable) for the heating and hot water in your flat and/or towards the heating in communal areas of the scheme.

There is an added support charge to cover the Scheme Manager service. If you are already in receipt of Housing Benefit you will not have to pay the charge. If you are on a low income, we can give you advice regarding any benefits that you may be entitled to.

Help and advice on claiming Welfare and/or Housing Benefit at the start of your tenancy, will also be avaliable.
